Somatics is a relatively new advance in neuromuscular education, and you might not have heard of it before. Here are answers to some common questions new patients may have.
Is Somatics a manual therapy?
No, Somatics isn’t like massage or chiropractic. In those modalities, the work is being done on you, but in Somatics, the work is done by you. YOU make changes in YOUR OWN nervous system through retraining YOUR brain and muscles together. All that’s required are gentle movements and conscious awareness.
How is Somatics better than other approaches?
Somatics addresses the root of muscle and joint pain, which comes from signals from the nervous system causing unnecessary muscle tension. By retraining the nervous system, you relieve the tension – long term. Somatics is an education process that makes you self-sufficient in addressing your own musculoskeletal complaints, rather than depending on doctors and therapists.
Who can benefit the most from Somatics?
Without exaggeration, Somatics is best suited for everyone! No certain level of fitness is required. Whether you’re an athlete, drive a lot, sit in an office, do heavy, repetitive lifting; or just want to reduce pain, feel more relaxed, and sleep better, Somatics can improve your health.
What does a typical session look like?
After an initial intake form and brief discussion, a typical one-on-one session involves some hands-on work on a table. Working through exercises involving gentle movement and active attention, you learn how to release tension and pain through what’s called pandiculation, the key practice for retraining the nervous system.
How do I get the most out of Somatics?
Practicing pandiculation at home is key. You’ll experience relief from your private sessions alone, but it takes steady work after sessions to experience the full results. Your nervous system was trained over long periods of time to keep muscles tense, and relaxing that reflex doesn’t happen overnight. Incorporating the exercises you learn in sessions into a daily routine will help you improve steadily and lastingly over weeks of practice. Cats pandiculate 41 times a day to remain limber and relaxed. We could all learn a lesson or two from them!
How long will it take for my discomfort to improve?
There’s no way to say for sure. While you’ll experience some immediate relief from sessions, the speed of your recovery will depend on the severity and duration of your tension/injury, how regularly you practice at home, stresses in your daily life, and other factors. Typically, around 5-6 clinical sessions will give you all the initial tools you need to move forward on your own, but occasional follow up sessions and group classes are recommended.

Lisa Godenick discovered Clinical Somatic Education in the search for a solution to her own neck and back pain. Lisa is passionate about empowering others to experience the pain relief and relaxation that Somatics brought to her own life.
Stemming from her work in Social and Behavioral Health as a Master of Public Health and her personal experience with kyphosis and lordosis, Lisa founded Sierra Somatics with the mission of eliminating chronic musculoskeletal pain by training people to become self-sufficient in reducing their own pain and tension.
